The YFA LAB is a place of investigation and risk taking. Through a series of exploratory workshops, focussing on the Almeida Theatre’s new season of plays, YFA LAB participants will examine the resonances that the Almeida Theatre’s programme of work has with the lives of young people.

When will the LAB happen?
Six day-long workshops to read and explore the Almeida's 08/09 Season of plays:
-Sunday 21 September, Kicking a Dead Horse, Sam Shepherd.
-Sunday 12 October, Waste, Harley Granville Barker.
-Sunday 2 November, In a Dark, Dark House, Neil Labute.
-Sunday 7 December, Duet for One, Tom Kempinski.
-Sunday 11 January, Parlour Song, Jez Butterworth.
-Sunday 8 February, When the Rain Stops Falling, Andrew Bovell.
All sessions are from 10.30am to 6pm and take place in the Almeida Theatre Rehearsal Room, 108 Upper Street.
Week-long Half-term Residency
Mon 16 Feb to Fri 20 Feb '09, 10am to 4pm.
Further exploration of the themes and ideas that run across the season, focussing on how these affect young people, in order to generate ideas and material for a new play.
The new play, based on the results of the LAB, will be delivered for rehearsals by April 2009.
Rehearsals
From April to July 2009, YFA LAB members will cease to be investigators and become performers. Through bi-weekly rehearsals out of school/college hours - Wednesday nights, from 6.30pm to 9.30pm, and Sunday mornings, from 10am to 1pm – YFA performers will rehearse the new play in preparation for a series of performances on the Almeida Theatre's main stage.

Tanya’s theatre adaptations include Peribanez (Lope de Vega) at the Young Vic Theatre, Blood Wedding (Lorca) at the Almeida Theatre, Night Flight (Saint Exupéry) at Muztheater, Amsterdam, Macbett (Ionesco) at the R.S.C., Vernon God Little (DBC Pierre) at the Young Vic, (nominated for an Olivier Award for best new play and a What’s on Stage Award for best new comedy), Romeo and Juliet for the Icelandic company Vesturport Theatre, at the Young Vic and Playhouse Theatres and Peter Pan (JM Barrie) opening June 2009 in a 1200-seater tent in Kensington Gardens. Her original work includes a link in Chain Play II at the Almeida, Or Nearest Offer, part of the Almeida’s summer festival ’09, and The Boy, a full length play currently in development. Her first short film, King Bastard, was funded by UK Film Council/BBC, stars Peter Mullan and is in postproduction. She is currently writing her first feature film, Random, developed by UKFC. Also in development are adaptations of Eduardo de Filippo’s Filumena for the Almeida, The Lesson (Ionesco) for Radio 3, and a loose adaptation of Dracula with Rufus Norris and the Circus Space.
Tanya trained at R.A.D.A. in London, and worked as an actor for many years before she started writing.

Jane is Senior Reader at Paines Plough, where she reads scripts and works closely with the writers on the Future Perfect scheme. She is a script reader for the National Theatre and the BBC and she has done development work with writers at RADA, ATC, and The Writers’ Company; and education work with young actors and writers.

Harry Blake
Harry Blake trained at Cambridge University and the Royal Academy of Music. Previous work includes Tobias and the Angel at the Young Vic (assistant conductor), A Karaoke Wedding at the Union (composer/MD), Storage at the Brighton Pavilion (composer/MD) and Marguerite at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket (musical assistant). He also works regularly as a facilitator with English Touring Opera and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Samantha Lane

Samantha is Director of Projects at the Almeida Theatre. She is responsible for the strategic vision of the department, taking the lead in devising and staffing all our activities. Samantha has worked extensively in the UK and abroad as a director, education/project manager and drama practitioner. She is passionate about the role that theatre education departments play in making performance accessible to young people and the community.
Samantha is responsible for devising the concept of the YFA LAB and commissioning/hiring the creative team. She lead on the initial workshops to generate material for the final play, and she is working in a dramaturgical capacity for the rehearsal period and final performance.
